# Copy and paste not working? How to fix it

When copy and paste suddenly dies, it feels like your computer broke. It almost never did. The cause is usually one small, stuck thing, and there is a short list of fixes that clear it in seconds. Here is that list, in the order most likely to work.

## Why is copy and paste not working?

Nearly always a stuck process or a setting rather than broken hardware. The clipboard runs as a background process, and when it hangs, copies stop landing and pastes come back empty. Restart that process first: Windows Explorer on Windows, or pboard on a Mac. If only one app refuses to paste, the app is the problem.

You copy something, you go to paste it, and nothing happens. Maybe the old clipboard contents come out instead. Maybe Ctrl+V does absolutely nothing. It is one of the more maddening glitches because copy and paste is so basic that when it stops, half of what you were doing grinds to a halt. The good news is that this is one of the most fixable problems on a computer. In nearly every case it is a single hung process or a tiny configuration issue, not a sign that anything is actually wrong with your machine.

This is the master guide for the whole cluster. Work through the fixes below roughly in order, since the early ones are fast and solve the majority of cases. If you already know your exact setup, jump to the device-specific guide for [Windows 11](https://relic.space/blog/copy-and-paste-not-working-windows-11), [Mac](https://relic.space/blog/copy-and-paste-not-working-on-mac), or [Excel](https://relic.space/blog/copy-and-paste-not-working-in-excel), each of which has its own specific culprits.

## Is the clipboard broken, or just one app?

Before changing any settings, spend thirty seconds working out which half is failing. The fix is completely different depending on the answer.

* **Test in a plain text editor.** Copy a word from one place and paste it into Notepad (Windows) or TextEdit (Mac). If it pastes there but not in your other app, the clipboard is fine and the destination app is the problem.
* **Try the right-click menu instead of the shortcut.** If right-click copy and paste works but Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V do not, your keyboard or your shortcuts are the issue, not the clipboard.
* **Try a different app entirely.** If nothing pastes anywhere, the clipboard process itself has hung, and that is the most common cause of all.

## Fix 1: restart the clipboard process

This is the single most effective fix, and most people never try it because they do not know the clipboard runs as a background process you can restart on its own. When that process hangs, copies stop landing and pastes come back empty. Restarting just that process is faster than rebooting and keeps everything else open.

### On Windows

Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc), find **Windows Explorer**, and choose Restart. That refreshes the desktop and the clipboard handling along with it, which clears most stuck states. If you are on Remote Desktop, the process to deal with is **rdpclip.exe** (sometimes listed as RDP Clipboard Monitor), which handles clipboard sharing with the remote machine. End it in Task Manager, then relaunch it yourself: press Win+R, type **rdpclip**, and hit Enter. It does not come back on its own. A plain restart of the machine resets the clipboard too, if that is quicker.

### On Mac

The Mac clipboard is handled by a process called **pboard** (the pasteboard server). When it locks up, open Terminal and run **killall pboard**. The process restarts automatically and your clipboard comes back to life. You can also force-quit it from Activity Monitor if you prefer not to use Terminal.

If restarting the clipboard process fixes it, that is your whole answer. There is nothing deeper to chase. A hung pasteboard is the boring, common cause behind most “copy and paste suddenly stopped” reports.

## Fix 2: rule out the keyboard and the shortcut

If right-click copy and paste works but the keyboard shortcuts do not, the clipboard is innocent. A few things to check:

* **A stuck modifier key.** A physically sticky Ctrl, Cmd, or Shift key can break shortcuts in ways that look random. Press each one a few times, or test on another keyboard.
* **Remapped shortcuts.**Some apps and keyboard utilities reassign Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V. If it only fails in one program, check that app’s keyboard settings. Apple makes the same point for the Mac: [every app can have its own shortcuts, and a shortcut that works in one app may do nothing in another](https://support.apple.com/en-us/102650).
* **The right shortcut for the context.** In most terminals, Ctrl+C cancels the running command rather than copying. Use Ctrl+Shift+C and Ctrl+Shift+V there instead. We cover this fully in our guide to [copy and paste in the terminal](https://relic.space/blog/copy-and-paste-in-the-terminal).

If the shortcuts are the problem across every app, our dedicated walkthrough for [Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V not working](https://relic.space/blog/ctrl-c-ctrl-v-not-working) goes deeper into keyboard drivers, stuck keys, and sticky-keys settings.

## Fix 3: the destination app is blocking paste

Sometimes copy works perfectly and one specific app simply will not accept a paste. This is common in banking sites, password fields, and some secure forms that deliberately disable pasting. It also happens when a browser tab has lost focus or a web app has a script error. Reload the page, click directly into the field first, and try again. If it is a browser-wide problem, restarting the browser usually clears it.

## Fix 4: clipboard history and clipboard managers

On Windows, clipboard history has hard limits that look like a bug when you hit them. [It holds 25 entries and drops the oldest unpinned one to make room, and it will not take an item larger than 4 MB](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/apps/using-the-clipboard). If a copy never appears in Win+V, that is usually why. Clear the list from Start > Settings > System > Clipboard, or press Win+V and choose Clear all, then test a fresh copy. Our page on [clipboard history settings](https://relic.space/how-to/see-clipboard-history-windows) walks through the same screens. Third-party clipboard tools can also conflict with each other; if you have more than one running, quit all but one and try again. If you are not sure what these tools do or whether you want one, our explainer on [what a clipboard manager is](https://relic.space/clipboard-manager) covers the basics.

## Fix 5: Office apps and Remote Desktop

Two settings deserve their own mention because they break copy and paste in predictable ways.

* **Excel and Word.** Office apps fail in their own special ways: a rogue add-in or merged cells can both block a paste. The Office Clipboard itself does not jam when it fills up, though. [It holds 24 items, and copying a 25th deletes the first one](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/word/copy-and-paste-using-the-office-clipboard), so what looks like a stuck clipboard is often just an older item that has already dropped off. The fixes are specific, so see [copy and paste not working in Excel](https://relic.space/blog/copy-and-paste-not-working-in-excel) for the full list, including when to use Paste Special.
* **Remote Desktop sessions.** If paste fails between your local machine and a remote one, clipboard redirection has usually dropped. Restarting rdpclip.exe inside the remote session, as in Fix 1, is the standard repair. If it has never worked in that session, check whether redirection is allowed at all: [an administrator can turn clipboard redirection off with Group Policy or Intune, and the most restrictive setting wins](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/virtual-desktop/redirection-configure-clipboard).

Stop losing what you copied to a glitch.

When the clipboard hangs, the thing you copied is just gone. Relic saves every copy automatically, keeps it searchable across your devices, and protects it with end-to-end encryption ([what that means for your data](https://relic.space/blog/what-is-end-to-end-encryption)), so a stuck process never costs you that link, address, or paragraph again.

## When should you stop troubleshooting?

If you have restarted the clipboard process, ruled out the keyboard, tested a plain text editor, and cleared clipboard history, you have covered well over ninety percent of cases. At that point a full restart of the computer resets every process and almost always clears whatever was left. It is rare to need anything more, and rarer still for copy and paste failure to point at a genuine hardware or system fault.

## Frequently asked questions

Why did copy and paste suddenly stop working?+

Almost always a stuck background process, not a broken computer. On Windows the clipboard process (often rdpclip.exe during Remote Desktop) hangs; on Mac the pboard process locks up. The first item you copy after the freeze gets dropped instead of stored. Restarting that one process, or just restarting the machine, fixes it the vast majority of the time.

How do I fix copy and paste without restarting my whole computer?+

Restart only the clipboard process. On Windows, open Task Manager and restart Windows Explorer, which refreshes clipboard handling. If you are on Remote Desktop, end rdpclip.exe instead, then relaunch it manually with Win+R, typing rdpclip, since it does not restart on its own. On Mac, open Terminal and run killall pboard, which restarts the pasteboard server. Each takes a few seconds and you keep everything else open.

Why does Ctrl+C work but Ctrl+V does nothing?+

Usually the destination app, not the clipboard. Some programs block paste in certain fields, a browser tab may have lost focus, or a stuck modifier key is interfering. Try pasting into a plain text editor first. If it pastes there, the original app or field is the problem, not your clipboard.
