# Universal Clipboard not working

Universal Clipboard lets you copy on your iPhone and paste on your Mac, but it only works when a whole stack of settings line up at once. One wrong toggle and nothing happens. Here is the checklist that fixes it, in the order worth trying.

## Why is Universal Clipboard not working?

Universal Clipboard rides on Handoff, so it fails when any one requirement slips. Check that both devices are signed into the same Apple Account, that Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are on, that Handoff is switched on, and that the two are near each other on the same network. Restart both devices if the settings all look right.

Even when it works, Universal Clipboard carries one item for a short time, and only between Apple devices. A clipboard manager like [Relic](https://relic.space/) syncs everything you copy between your devices and lets you search it later, on iPhone and Mac as well as Windows, Linux and Android.

When Universal Clipboard works, it feels like magic: copy a phone number on your iPhone, paste it into a document on your Mac, no app or button involved. When it stops, it gives you nothing. No error, no warning, just a paste that brings back whatever you last copied on the second device. The reason is that Apple built it on top of Handoff, which quietly leans on four separate things being true at the same moment. Break any one of them and the whole feature goes silent.

The good news is that the fix is almost never complicated. It is a process of checking each requirement until you find the one that slipped. Work through the list below on both devices and you will usually have it back in a couple of minutes.

## What does Universal Clipboard need to work?

Before the steps, it helps to know what you are checking. Universal Clipboard is part of [**Continuity**](https://support.apple.com/en-us/108046), the set of features that let Apple devices hand work back and forth. For it to function, all of these must be true on both the device you copy from and the device you paste to:

* Both devices are signed into the **same Apple Account** (formerly Apple ID).
* **Bluetooth** is on, on both.
* **Wi-Fi** is on, on both, and they can reach each other on the network.
* **Handoff** is switched on, on both.
* The devices are **near each other**. Apple puts the range at [30 feet (10 metres)](https://support.apple.com/guide/iphone/copy-and-paste-between-devices-iph220ea8dca/ios).

That is the entire dependency list. Notice there is no setting called “Universal Clipboard” anywhere. It rides along on Handoff, which is why turning Handoff off, or losing Bluetooth, takes the clipboard with it.

## How do you get Universal Clipboard working again?

### 1\. Check you are on the same Apple Account

This is the most common cause after an update or a new device. On your iPhone or iPad, open **Settings** and tap your name at the top to see the account email. On your Mac, open **System Settings** and click your name at the top. If the two emails do not match, the clipboard will not sync. Sign the odd one out into the correct account and try again.

### 2\. Turn Bluetooth and Wi-Fi off and on

Both are required, and both occasionally get stuck. On the iPhone, go to **Settings**, then Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, and toggle each off then on. On the Mac, do the same from **Control Centre** or System Settings. Avoid using the toggles in the iPhone Control Centre for this, as those only disconnect temporarily rather than fully turning the radios off. A full off and on is what clears most glitches.

### 3\. Confirm Handoff is on, on both devices

On the iPhone or iPad: **Settings → General → AirPlay & Continuity** (or **AirPlay & Handoff**), and make sure **Handoff** is on. On the Mac: **System Settings → General → AirDrop & Continuity** (or **AirDrop & Handoff**), and turn on [Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices](https://support.apple.com/en-us/102426). If it was already on, toggle it off, wait a few seconds, and back on. This single setting controls the clipboard, so it is the one to double-check.

### 4\. Make sure both devices are close and on reachable networks

Universal Clipboard uses Bluetooth to discover the other device and Wi-Fi to move the data, so the two need to be near each other and able to talk. If one device is on mobile data, or on a separate guest network that blocks local connections, the copy will not cross. Put both on the same Wi-Fi network and inside that range, then try the copy again.

Quick test: copy a short piece of plain text, like a single word, rather than an image or a file. Plain text is the most reliable thing to send first. If a word copies across but a photo does not, the feature is working and the issue is the size or type of what you are copying.

### 5\. Restart both devices

If the settings all look right and it still fails, restart both the Mac and the iPhone. This clears the Continuity and Bluetooth state that occasionally hangs after an update. It is the oldest fix in the book because it genuinely works more often than it should.

### 6\. Check your software is current

Continuity features can break when one device is running a much older version of its operating system than the other. Update both to the latest iOS, iPadOS and macOS releases your hardware supports, then test again. Mismatched versions are a quiet cause of sync features failing without any obvious reason.

## Does Universal Clipboard work with Windows or Android?

Sometimes the feature is working fine and it simply is not built for what you are trying to do. It has two hard limits. First, it only moves the single most recent item, and [only for a short window](https://support.apple.com/en-us/102430), so it is no help if you want to grab something you copied an hour ago. Second, it is Apple-only. If one of your devices runs Windows or Android, Universal Clipboard will never reach it, no matter how many toggles you flip.

For a mixed setup, you need a different approach. Microsoft Phone Link covers iPhone-to-Windows for basic tasks, and Android users often reach for Quick Share or KDE Connect. The broader picture of moving text between gadgets is covered in our guide to [copy and paste between your phone and computer](https://relic.space/blog/copy-and-paste-between-phone-and-computer). If you mainly want to fire a single link or address across, see [how to send a link from your phone to your computer](https://relic.space/blog/how-to-send-a-link-from-your-phone-to-your-computer).

Tired of a clipboard that only works when everything lines up?

Universal Clipboard syncs one item, briefly, and only between Apple devices. Relic keeps everything you copy, forever, searchable on every device, and it is encrypted before it ever leaves your device ([end-to-end encryption, explained](https://relic.space/blog/what-is-end-to-end-encryption)). It works across iPhone, Android and Windows, not just inside one ecosystem.

## A clipboard that does not depend on luck

Universal Clipboard breaks because it relies on a chain of conditions all holding at once. A clipboard history that syncs through your account, rather than over a fragile local link, sidesteps that entirely. There is nothing to pair, nothing to keep in range, and nothing that disappears while you are still looking for it. You copy on one device and it is there on the others, with a full history you can search.

That is the idea behind a proper [clipboard manager](https://relic.space/clipboard-manager-windows). Instead of one item passed across a short-lived Bluetooth handshake, you keep a permanent, searchable record of everything you copy, on [iPhone](https://relic.space/clipboard-history-iphone), [Android](https://relic.space/clipboard-history-android) and desktop alike. When the sync is built to be private and permanent, you stop thinking about whether it will work today, and start trusting it will.
