## [Paste something with it](#use-it)

The mini picker is the small version of the Relic window. It has a search box and a short list of rows, and nothing else. It is made for the moment you are already typing and need one thing out of your vault.

1. Put your cursor where the text should go
Click into the field or the document you want to fill, so the text cursor is blinking there.
2. Press Ctrl + Shift + Space
Press Ctrl \+ Shift \+ Space. A small picker opens with the search box ready, showing your most recent items.
A form field labelled Federal tax ID with the text cursor blinking in it, and below the cursor a small picker. The picker has a search box holding the words tax id and an Esc pill, then three rows: Maplewood EIN, which is selected and shows an Enter pill; EIN confirmation letter; and W-9 for Maplewood Studio LLC. The picker opens under the cursor with the search box ready. Enter puts the selected row into the field.
3. Type a word or two
Type part of what you are looking for. The list filters as you go, and shows up to eight rows at a time.
4. Press Enter
Move with Up and Down if you need to, then press Enter. The picker closes and the item goes into the field you were in.

## [Where it opens](#where-it-opens)

Relic asks your computer where the text cursor is and opens the picker just below it. When the app you are in does not report a cursor (some browsers and some editors never do), the picker opens next to the mouse pointer instead. Either way it stays on the screen you are working on.

The full window opens next to the mouse pointer. Turn on [Settings › General › Open history at the cursor](https://relic.space/help/settings-general#paste-at-caret) and it follows your text cursor too, on Windows and on a Mac.

Open history at the cursor

Summon the picker near your text cursor when we can.

Settings › General › Power features › Open history at the cursor: toggle, default off.

## [What the rows show](#rows)

Each row is one line: a small picture of what kind of thing it is, then its title. A gold gem at the right means the item is in your Vault. A _snippet_ pill means the item is a piece of text you saved to reuse.

* **The pencil.** Point at a row (or select it with the arrow keys) and a pencil appears at its right. Click it and the window grows into the full Relic window with that item open for editing. The picker is too small to edit in, so it hands the job over.
* **Snippets jump to the top.** If you have saved a snippet and given it a trigger word, typing that word (or the start of it) pins the snippet above everything else.
* **A dot** at the right of a row means that item has not finished syncing yet.

## [Swapping to the full window](#swap)

The two pickers share one window, so pressing the other one's shortcut swaps between them rather than closing anything. With the mini picker open, press Ctrl \+ Shift \+ Q and it grows into the full window, keeping what you typed. With the full window open, press Ctrl \+ Shift \+ Space and it shrinks back down.

Use the full window when you want the things the picker leaves out: tags, the date filter, All and Vault, sorting, the row menu and multi-select. The [tour of the window](https://relic.space/help/the-popup) covers all of it.

## [The keys](#keys)

* Up and Down move the selection. The list scrolls when you go past the eighth row, and pulls in older items as you keep going.
* Enter takes the selected item and closes the picker. With [Paste directly on select](https://relic.space/help/paste-on-select) on, which it is out of the box, the item is pasted into the app you came from. With it off, the item is copied and you press Ctrl \+ V yourself.
* Esc clears the search first, then closes the picker.
* Pressing the mini shortcut again while the picker is open closes it.

The shortcut is yours to change:

Summon the compact, cursor-anchored picker.

Settings › General › Shortcuts › Mini picker shortcut: shortcut, default Ctrl + Shift + Space. Mac: Ctrl + Shift + Space. Linux: Ctrl + Shift + Space

If it does nothing at all, another app has probably claimed the same keys. [Changing a shortcut](https://relic.space/help/shortcuts#change) says how to tell and what to do.
