Type a date the way you would say it, like last week or June 20, and Relic turns it into a filter you can remove. Plus the date button and its presets.

## [Type a date in the search box](#type-a-date)

You do not have to open anything to search by date. Write the date the way you would say it and Relic takes it out of your words, turns it into a gold chip above the list, and searches the rest.

The Relic window with receipt from june typed in the search box. One result: the Fairhaven Inn folio, a file captured on a Windows PC on 14 June, tagged receipt and kept in the Vault. Relic takes the month out of the words and searches for the rest.

The chip carries the words you typed, so you can see what Relic understood. Click it and the date filter comes off. If it came from something you typed, clicking the chip takes that phrase back out of the box for you.

A date mixes with everything else the box understands. See [search operators](https://relic.space/help/search-syntax) for tags, kinds and the rest, and [Searching your vault](https://relic.space/help/search) for the window itself.

## [Phrases that work](#phrases)

All of these are understood, in the search box and nowhere else you have to learn:

_today_

Since midnight. yesterday is the day before.

_last week_

The calendar week before this one. last month and last year work the same way.

_this week_

Since the week started. this month and this year too.

_recently_

The last month or so. lately means the same. just now means the last day.

_a few days ago_

Roughly the last work week. a few weeks ago, a few months ago and a few years ago widen it.

_a while ago_

Older than about a month. ages ago is older than about three months.

_3 days ago_

That day exactly. Weeks, months and years work too, in digits or words: two weeks ago.

_last 30 days_

A rolling window up to now. past 6 months does the same.

_from June to August_

Everything between the two, ends included.

_before 2025_

Older than that. until and up to do the same.

_after June_

Newer than that. since and as of do the same.

_June 20_

One day. 20 June, June 20 2026 and 6/20 all land in the same place.

_2026-06-20_

One day, written out. 2026-06 is the whole month.

_in June_

That month. Relic picks the most recent June that has already happened.

A bare month name is enough for most months. _May_ and _March_ are the exceptions, because they are ordinary words as well. Write _in May_ or _in March_ when you mean the month, or give it a day or a year.

Nothing here needs a network or a model. It is the same short list of patterns every time, so the same phrase always means the same range.

## [The date button](#date-button)

The calendar button sits to the left of the sort button, under the search box. It opens a sheet of presets, and it turns gold whenever a date filter is on, whether you picked it here or typed it.

The date sheet. A header reading Filter by date, then four rows: Today, This week, Last 30 days and This year, with Last 30 days highlighted. Under them a Custom range row that opens a calendar, then a Clear date filter row, then a tip about typing dates in search. The presets resolve to exactly what the typed phrases resolve to.

* **Today**, **This week**, **Last 30 days** and **This year** apply straight away and close the sheet.
* **Custom range…** swaps the sheet for a calendar where you pick a first and a last day.
* **Clear date filter** takes the filter off.

A range you pick here wins over a date phrase still sitting in the search box. Clear it and the typed phrase takes over again.

## [How dates behave](#how-dates-behave)

* **Dates are always in the past.** Relic is an archive of things you already copied, so a phrase pointing at the future matches nothing and your words are left alone.
* **The phrase is not searched for.** Once a date phrase becomes a filter it stops being a word to match, so _invoice last week_ does not go looking for items containing the word _week_.
* **A bare month or day assumes the recent past.** _June_ in September means this June. _June_ in March means last June.
* **Slash dates read month first.** _6/20_ is the twentieth of June. When the first number cannot be a month, Relic swaps the two for you.
* **The date is when Relic captured the item.** A date written inside the item does not count. A receipt dated in March that you copied in June is a June item.

Combining filters

A date works with everything else. Add a tag chip, switch to Vault, keep typing words: every filter narrows the same list, and each chip above the list comes off on its own when you click it.
