# Settings: General

Every row in the General pane of Relic's desktop settings: launch at login, the shortcuts, the tray icon, appearance, popup size, and the power features.

Updated 10 September 2026 · Windows, Mac, Linux

Open Settings with the gear in the Relic window. General is the first pane. Every row below is drawn the way the app draws it, with its default. Where a row has its own page, the row's name links to it.

The Settings window: a sidebar on the left listing General, Capture, Search and AI, Vault and storage, Sync and account, and About, with General selected, and the General rows on the right. The Settings window with the General pane open.

## [Startup and the tray](#startup)

Launch Relic at login

Start capturing the moment you sign in.

Settings › General › Launch Relic at login: toggle, default on.

Show icon in menu bar

Hide it to run purely from the hotkey.

Settings › General › Show icon in menu bar: toggle, default on.

With **Launch Relic at login** on, Relic starts hidden when you sign in and begins capturing straight away. On Linux desktops with no tray, the second row explains that Relic already runs from the shortcut alone. More on the tray in [The Relic window](https://relic.space/help/the-popup#tray).

## [Shortcuts](#shortcuts)

Each row shows the current keys and a **Change** button. The last two rows appear only while **Sequential paste stack** is on. To change one, or to put it back to its default, see [Changing a shortcut](https://relic.space/help/shortcuts#change).

Shortcuts

Open history shortcut

Global hotkey to summon the full popup.

Settings › General › Shortcuts › Open history shortcut: shortcut, default Ctrl + Shift + Q. Mac: Ctrl + Shift + Q. Linux: Ctrl + Shift + Q

Mini picker shortcut

Summon the compact, cursor-anchored picker.

Settings › General › Shortcuts › Mini picker shortcut: shortcut, default Ctrl + Shift + Space. Mac: Ctrl + Shift + Space. Linux: Ctrl + Shift + Space

Settings › General › Shortcuts › Save and annotate shortcut: shortcut, default Ctrl + Shift + E. Mac: Ctrl + Shift + E. Linux: Ctrl + Shift + E

Keep the most recent capture in place.

Settings › General › Shortcuts › Promote-last shortcut: shortcut, default Ctrl + Shift + W. Mac: Ctrl + Shift + W. Linux: Ctrl + Shift + W

Quick-paste #1 shortcut

Paste the newest item from any device into the app you're in.

Settings › General › Shortcuts › Quick-paste #1 shortcut: shortcut, default Ctrl + Shift + 1. Mac: Ctrl + Shift + 1\. Linux: Ctrl + Shift + 1

Settings › General › Shortcuts › Quick-paste #2 shortcut: shortcut, default Ctrl + Shift + 2. Mac: Ctrl + Shift + 2\. Linux: Ctrl + Shift + 2

On a Mac

The keys are the same. Ctrl means the Control key, not Command, because Command+Shift+Q is Log Out. The keycaps in the app read Ctrl, Option and Cmd there.

## [Look and feel](#look-and-feel)

Appearance

Settings › General › Appearance: choice of System, Dark, Light; default Light.

Popup size

How tall the history popup opens. Mini shows just the last few items.

Settings › General › Popup size: choice of Mini, Small, Standard; default Small.

Show vault animation

Show the gemstone flourish for vault feedback.

Settings › General › Show vault animation: toggle, default on.

Play sound on promotion

Use the bundled Relic WAV only when an item is promoted.

Settings › General › Play sound on promotion: toggle, default off.

**Appearance** follows your system, or stays dark or light. The default is Light. **Popup size** sets how tall the window opens. The last two rows are the small flourish and the sound Relic plays when you keep an item; both are cosmetic.

## [Paste behaviour](#paste-behaviour)

Paste directly on select

Copy and paste into the frontmost app in one press.

Settings › General › Paste directly on select: toggle, default on.

On, picking an item in the window copies it and pastes it into the app you were just in, in one press. Off, picking an item only copies it, and you press Ctrl›V yourself. On a Mac this needs the Accessibility permission below.

## [Accessibility on a Mac](#accessibility)

Let Relic paste for you

macOS asks permission before any app can press keys for you. Relic uses it to paste the item you pick straight into the app you were just in, and to grab your selection when you press the save and annotate hotkey.

Settings › General › Accessibility › Let Relic paste for you: button: Allow Relic to paste.

This section only appears on a Mac. macOS asks before any app may press keys on your behalf. Relic uses that permission for two things: to paste the item you picked into the app you came from, and to grab your selection when you press the save and annotate shortcut. Everything else works without it. The section shows whether the permission is _Allowed_, _Not allowed yet_, or still being checked, with a button to open the right pane of System Settings and a _Re-check_ button for after you have granted it.

## [Power features](#power-features)

Four features that are off until you want them. Each one adds something to the window or a new shortcut.

Power features

Multi-select to combine

Pick several history items, then paste them as one block.

Settings › General › Power features › Multi-select to combine: toggle, default off.

Clip reminders

Set a reminder on any item and get a nudge later.

Settings › General › Power features › Clip reminders: toggle, default off.

Open history at the cursor

Summon the picker near your text cursor when we can.

Settings › General › Power features › Open history at the cursor: toggle, default off.

Sequential paste stack

Queue several items, then paste them one at a time in order. Adds two shortcuts.

Settings › General › Power features › Sequential paste stack: toggle, default off.

**Multi-select to combine** lets you pick several rows and paste them as one block, joined by a newline, a space or a comma. **Clip reminders** adds a _Remind me…_ item to the row menu. **Open history at the cursor** opens the window next to your text cursor when the app you are in reports where that is (Windows and Mac only). The mini picker already follows the cursor on its own. **Sequential paste stack** turns on the two stack shortcuts.
