# The Vault

Everything you copy lands in your history. The Vault is the part you chose to keep, and kept items never expire. Here is how to put something in it.

## [What the Vault is](#what-it-is)

Everything you copy lands in your history. History is a passing thing. Relic lets go of the oldest items to stay within the limit you set, and within the one your plan sets.

The Vault is the part you kept on purpose. A kept item never expires and is never removed to make room. It is the answer to "I will want this again in six months".

A gold gem at the right of a row means the item is in your Vault.

The Relic window with the Vault scope selected. Three rows, each with a gold gem at its right: a boarding pass image from a Pixel 9, a note about an EIN from a Windows PC, and a PDF of a hotel folio. The switch above the list reads All and Vault, with Vault chosen. The window with the Vault scope on. Only kept items are listed.

## [Ways to keep something](#keep-something)

There are eight. Use whichever is nearest.

* **The gem on a row.** Hover a row, or select it with the arrow keys, and the actions appear at its right. Click the gem. It fills gold and Relic says so.
* **The row menu.** Right-click a row and choose **Keep forever**. On a kept item the same entry reads **Take out of the Vault**.
* **The key.** With a row selected, press Ctrl+K (Cmd+K on a Mac). Enter copies, K keeps.
* **The shortcut.** Ctrl \+ Shift \+ W keeps the last thing you captured, without opening the window. See [keep the last thing you copied](https://relic.space/help/keep-the-last-thing).
* **Keep in the bulk bar.** Select several rows and press **Keep**. See [picking several items at once](https://relic.space/help/multi-select).
* **Save to Vault when you write one.** The [composer](https://relic.space/help/compose) has a **Save to Vault** tick box next to its Create button.
* **Auto-save on a phone.** On by default, so anything you share into Relic from your phone is kept.
* **Save everything on a computer.** Off by default. Turn it on and nothing you copy ever expires.

The first two say the same thing when they land:

Promoted to Vault

The gem is a toggle. Click it again on a kept item and Relic says _Removed from Vault_. Keeping several at once says _4 promoted to Vault_, or _Already in your Vault_ if they were all kept already.

The two automatic ways are settings:

Auto-save to Vault

New captures go straight to your Vault

Settings on your phone › Capture › Auto-save to Vault: toggle, default on.

Save everything to Vault

Auto-save every capture to your Vault so nothing expires. Turning this on also saves everything already in your history.

Settings › Capture › Save everything to Vault: toggle, default off.

Turning on [Settings › Capture › Save everything to Vault](https://relic.space/help/settings-capture#auto-vault) also keeps everything already sitting in your history, so your Vault can jump by hundreds of items in one press.

## [Looking at just your Vault](#vault-scope)

The switch above the list picks what you are looking through. **All** is everything Relic has. **Vault** is only the items you kept. Search, tags, the date filter and sorting all work the same in both.

The All and Vault switch, with Vault chosen.

Snippet triggers follow the switch too. With **Vault** on, only kept [snippets](https://relic.space/help/snippets) jump to the top.

## [Taking something out](#taking-one-out)

Clicking the gem again drops the item back into your history. It is still there, it just expires like anything else now.

Deleting a kept item is different. Because you kept it on purpose, Relic asks first, with a dialog titled **Delete from Vault?** and the line _This permanently removes "…" from your vault. This can't be undone._ There is no undo afterwards. See [delete and undo](https://relic.space/help/delete-and-undo).

## [How many you can keep](#how-many)

The free plan holds a limited number of kept items. Settings shows where you stand, as a count against your limit:

Saved items (Vault)

Promoted relics never expire on any tier.

Settings › Vault and storage › Saved items (Vault): text, for example 12 / 100.

When you are at the limit, Settings shows a banner:

Vault is full. Free up space or upgrade to keep saving items.Dismiss

A capture that wanted to be kept is still captured. It goes to your history instead and says so, so nothing is ever lost to a full Vault:

Saved to history. Vault is full

To make room, click the gem on kept items you no longer need, or delete them. Kept items also count towards your storage, which [Settings › Vault and storage › Storage used](https://relic.space/help/settings-vault-and-storage#used) tracks.
