## Why a megabyte is not always a megabyte

There are two ways to count storage and they disagree. The decimal system, used on hard-drive boxes and by most operating systems for file sizes, says 1 KB is 1000 bytes. The binary system, used by RAM and by some tools when they report sizes, says 1 KB is 1024 bytes. That small gap compounds: by the terabyte the two answers are off by about ten percent. This **bytes converter** shows every unit at once and lets you flip between 1000 and 1024 so you always know which number you are looking at.

## Keep the figure you just converted

The size you worked out for a quota, an upload limit, or a billing estimate is the kind of value you copy once and need again later. **Relic** is an encrypted, permanent memory for everything you copy, so that figure, that limit, and that one note stay searchable on every device, forever, end-to-end encrypted so only you can read them. The converter is free. Never re-running the same math is the upgrade.

## Frequently asked questions

How do I convert bytes to KB, MB, GB, or TB?+

Enter a value, pick its unit from the dropdown, and the tool shows the same amount in every unit at once, from bytes up to terabytes. Your chosen unit is highlighted, and each row has a copy button that copies the number without the thousands separators.

What's the difference between decimal (1000) and binary (1024)?+

There are two ways to count storage and they disagree. The decimal toggle treats 1 KB as 1000 bytes (used on drive packaging and by most operating systems for file sizes), while the binary toggle treats 1 KB as 1024 bytes (used by RAM and some tools). Flip between them to see which number you're actually looking at.

Why does my hard drive show less space than the box promised?+

Because the manufacturer counts in decimal (a 1 TB drive is 1,000,000,000,000 bytes) while your operating system may report in binary (dividing by 1024 each step). That gap compounds, and by the terabyte the two answers differ by roughly ten percent, so no space actually went missing.

Which units does it cover?+

Bytes (B), KB, MB, GB, and TB. Type into the value box, and every one of those is computed live using whichever base (1000 or 1024) you've selected.

Is the calculation done privately?+

Yes. It's plain arithmetic that runs entirely in your browser, so nothing you type is sent over the network. The quota, upload limit, or billing figure you're working out stays on your device.

You just copied that. What if you never lost it?

**Relic** remembers everything you copy, forever, searchable on every device, and end-to-end encrypted so only you can read it.
