Character Counter
Count characters, words, sentences and lines as you type. Built for posts and fields with hard limits. Free, private, no sign-up.
Count every character as you type
Paste a bio, a caption, a product title, or a text message and this character counter updates the moment you type. You get characters with and without spaces, plus words, sentences, and lines, so you can write right up to a limit without guessing. It all runs in your browser, so nothing you write is ever uploaded.
Limits worth remembering
- Tweet or X post: 280 characters. Bluesky: 300. Threads: 500.
- Instagram bio: 150 characters. Twitter bio: 160.
- SEO title: about 60 characters. Meta description: about 155.
- One SMS segment: 160 characters before it splits into two.
Keep the lines you trimmed
Tightening a caption usually means cutting good lines you might want back. Relic keeps a searchable, end-to-end encrypted memory of everything you copy, on every device, so a phrase you trimmed today is still a search away next month. The counter is free. Never losing a good line again is the part people stay for.
Frequently asked questions
Does the count include spaces?
You get both numbers: characters with spaces and without. Most platform limits, like the 160 of an SMS or a 150-character bio, count spaces, so the with-spaces figure is usually the one to watch.
What are the character limits on major platforms?
X/Twitter posts are 280, Instagram bios 150 and captions 2,200, SMS 160 per message, meta titles are safe under about 60, and meta descriptions under about 160. Paste your text and check against the one you need.
How do emoji count?
An emoji is often more than one character under the hood, and platforms count them differently: X counts most emoji as two. If you are close to a limit with emoji in the text, leave a little headroom.
Is my text stored or sent anywhere?
No. Counting happens live in your browser and the text never leaves your device.
