What an attachment is
An item in Relic is usually one thing: some text, a picture, a file. A note can also carry files alongside its text. Those files are its attachments.
This is how you keep a thing and its paperwork together. The note says what the job was, and the invoice, the photo of the receipt and the signed PDF ride along with it. All of it is encrypted the same way and syncs the same way.
You can add and remove attachments on a note, on a computer. A picture or a file item shows its attachments but does not let you change them, and neither does a phone.
Adding files
Open the note (double-click its row), scroll to ATTACHMENTS, and press Add files. Pick as many as you like. The button reads Adding…while your computer's file picker is open.
Files you have just picked sit on a warm gold background, so you can tell at a glance what has not been saved yet. Next to the button a running total counts what the item weighs against the limit for one item, like 1.2 MB / 25.0 MB.
Anything that would push you over is left behind, and a line under the button says how many and what the limit was, like 2 files skipped, over the 25.0 MB limit. Nothing is truncated and nothing is uploaded half-finished. Either a file fits or it is not added.
The composer has the same section, so you can write a note and attach files to it in one go. On a computer you can also drop files onto the Relic window to save them.
Taking a file off
Press the ×at the end of a file's row. The name goes grey and gets a line through it, and the × becomes an undo arrow. Nothing has happened yet. Press the arrow to change your mind, or press Save to make it stick.
A file you added in this sitting has not been saved yet, so its × removes it outright. The running total drops as soon as you do, which is the quick way to get back under the limit.
What the row shows
A row with attachments carries a paperclip and a count on its small second line, after the device and the time. One attachment shows that file's own icon instead of the paperclip.
Open the item and each attachment is a row of its own with its name and size. Pictures show a thumbnail. Two buttons sit at the end of each row: one opens the file in whatever app your computer uses for that type, the other saves a copy to your save folder. A file that has not reached this device yet says Loading… where its size goes, and the buttons appear once it lands.
When a change does not stick
Saving an item writes its title, note and tags first, and its attachments second. If the second part cannot go through, the first part is still saved and the toast tells you the files were left as they were rather than pretending it worked.
- Attachments kept as they were: over the size limit. The files you added would push the item past the limit for one item. Take one off and try again.
- Attachments kept as they were: connect to the internet and try again. Changing attachments means rebuilding the bundle they live in, and a file that has not been downloaded to this device yet has to be fetched first.
- Attachments kept as they were. This kind of item does not take attachments.
When it does go through you just get the usual Saved, and the new set of files goes out to your other devices with the next sync.
