Capture is the second pane in Settings on a computer. It decides what Relic takes off the clipboard, how much of it is kept, and which apps it leaves alone. Every row below is drawn the way the app draws it, with its default.
What Relic picks up
Three switches for the three kinds of thing you can copy. All three are on to start with. Turn one off and Relic ignores that kind entirely, so nothing is saved and nothing appears in the window. Turning off images is the usual one: screenshots are the biggest items most people copy.
Formatting
The first row is about what Relic stores. On, a copy from a document or a web page keeps its bold, its links and its colours, so pasting it back somewhere that understands formatting looks the same as the original.
The second row is about what Relic gives back. Turn it off and every paste comes out as plain text, however the item was stored. For a one-off, leave it on and use Copy as > Plain text in the right-click menu on the row instead.
Secrets
Both of these are on, and the app marks them recommended. The first spots things that look like API keys, tokens and card numbers and hides them behind dots in the list, so a shoulder or a screen share does not read them. The item is still there and still pastes normally.
The second is about the system clipboard rather than Relic. After you copy something that looks like a secret, Relic wipes the clipboard 30 seconds later, so the next app that peeks at it finds nothing. If you have copied something else in the meantime, it leaves your clipboard alone.
Save everything to Vault
Off by default. Normally you keep the items you want and the rest age out of your history. Turn this on and every capture is kept the moment it arrives, so nothing ever expires. Switching it on also keeps everything already sitting in your history, which can be a lot of items at once. It counts against your storage, so watch the numbers in Vault and storage.
Max item size
A slider from 1 MB to 100 MB, set to 100 MB. Anything bigger than the limit is skipped. What happens next depends on what you copied.
- A file you copied in the file manager is kept as a path only. Relic saves the location of the file as a line of text, so the row still tells you which file it was and still pastes the path. The contents are not copied into your vault, so the file has to still be on that computer for you to open it.
- Text or an image over the limit is skipped and nothing is added.
When a capture is dropped for being too big, Relic tells you once, and not again for an hour.
Never capture from
The last row on the pane is a list of apps Relic ignores. Copy something in one of them and nothing enters Relic at all, and nothing is said about it. A password manager is the reason this exists.
Each blocked app shows as a small tag with an x to remove it. To add one, press Add app…. A panel opens under the row headed Open right now, listing the apps you currently have open, each with its window title beside it. Click one and it moves up into the blocked list. There is a refresh arrow if you open an app after the panel, and a Done button to close it.
On Windows the panel also has a Browse… button, so you can pick a program file on disk instead of waiting for the app to be open.
If everything you have open is already blocked, the panel says Nothing else is open. Use Browse to pick a program file. on Windows, and Nothing else is open. Open the app you want to block, then refresh. on a Mac or on Linux. While it is looking it says Looking at open windows….
