Switching, step by step

Switching signs this device out of one Relic account and into another. It is the right move when you set an account up with the wrong email, or when a work vault and a personal vault share a laptop.

  1. Open Sync and account

On a computer open SettingsSync and account. The top row says who you are connected as. On a phone, open the settings sheet and scroll down to Switch account.

  2. Press Switch account

Press Switch account. It sits on the account row next to Sync now and Disconnect. The button is there when you are connected to Relic Cloud. A device pointed at your own server uses Disconnect instead.

  3. Read the confirm and go ahead

Relic asks Switch account? and spells out what it is about to do. Press Switch account again to go ahead, or Cancel to stay put.

  4. Sign in to the other account

You land back at the sign-in screen. Sign in to the other account, then unlock its vault with its passphrase, its recovery kit, or by pairing with a device already on it.

  5. Decide what happens to the old items

Anything the previous account left on this device is tucked away rather than uploaded. Go back to SettingsSync and account and pick one of the three choices below.

A confirm dialog titled Switch account? Its body explains that sync stops and the vault key is removed from this computer, that reconnecting needs the vault passphrase or recovery kit, and that local history stays. A Cancel link sits beside a Switch account button.

On a phone the wording matches what a phone does: This clears your saved connection, then you sign in to another account. To reconnect this one you will need its vault passphrase (or recovery kit). Your relics stay safe on the server.

What happens to your old items

The items the old account left on this device are not uploaded to the new one. Relic holds them back and hides them from your history, so the new account's list is only the new account's things. Nothing goes up until you say so.

On a computer it tells you once, in a desktop notification:

Your previous items are tucked away
12 items from your last account are hidden on this device, not uploaded here. Choose what to do in Settings.

A row also appears in Settings › Sync and account, headed Items from before this sign-in: 12 items on this device belong to a different account, so they are tucked away and hidden from your history. Nothing has been uploaded here. The Relic window shows a banner about them too, with a Review button that opens the same row. See the banners.

Upload, tuck away, or delete

The row carries three buttons. Nothing happens until you press one.

  • Upload all brings the tucked-away items back into your history and sends them to the account you are signed in to now. Relic confirms first: The tucked-away items come back into your history and upload to [your account], counting against its storage. If they belong to someone else's account, leave them tucked away instead.
  • Keep them tucked away leaves them alone. They stay on the device, hidden, costing nothing on either account. The row stops asking but does not disappear, so you can change your mind later. It is then headed Tucked-away items: 12 items from another account are tucked away on this device. They come back on their own if you sign back into that account.
  • Delete from device erases them here. Relic confirms: These items are erased from this computer. They are not touched on the account they came from, so any device still signed into that account keeps its copy. This can't be undone here.

If you are not sure, keep them tucked away. Signing back into the old account brings them back on their own, and you can still upload or delete them whenever you like.
