Opening an item
Four ways in, all of which land on the same screen:
- Double-click the row.
- Click the eye on a picture row.
- Click the pencil on a row in the mini picker.
- Right-click the row (or click the ⋯ button) and choose Edit.
On a phone, tap a row once to select it and again to open it. On a wide iPad or a wide window the item opens in the pane beside the list.
Editing it
- Open the item
Double-click the row, or click the eye on an image row, or the pencil in the mini picker. You can also right-click the row and choose Edit.
- Change what you came for
The text of a note is editable in the Content box. A picture, a file or a secret cannot be rewritten, so those show their contents read-only instead.
- Give it a title, a note and tags
Type a title, add a note, then type a tag and press Enter. Tags you already use are offered as one-tap chips underneath.
The three fields you fill in most often, and the hint the app shows under them. - Press Save
The change is written straight away and goes out to your other devices with the next sync. Cancel throws the edit away.
The hint under the fields says what they are for: Title, note and tags are all searchable. Type a tag and press Enter.
What is in the editor
Top to bottom, showing only the parts that make sense for the item you opened:
- The picture, the file, or the secret
- A photo or an image file is shown at the top. Other files get a card with the file name and its size. A secret shows dots and a Reveal button, and stays read-only even when revealed.
- EXTRACTED TEXT
- For a picture or a file, the words Relic read out of it. There is a copy button and an expand button beside the label; expanded, it fills the dialog and the button becomes Collapse.
- CONTENT
- The text of a note, editable. Show all beside the label blows it up to fill the dialog. Past about 64 KB the text is shown read-only, because a box that big is too slow to type in. You can still select and copy it.
- TITLE
- What the row calls the item. Relic fills this in for you when it can; type over it whenever you like.
- NOTE
- A few lines of your own. This is the place for why you kept it.
- TAGS
- Type a tag and press Enter. Tags Relic worked out itself sit in the same box and can be removed, except a secret tag, which shows a lock. Under the box, YOUR TAGS · TAP TO ADD offers the tags you already use.
- ATTACHMENTS
- Files carried by the item, with an Add files button. See attachments.
- Save as snippet
- A tick box that turns the item into a snippet you can pull up by typing its title.
A tag with spaces or capitals is tidied as you add it: it is lowercased and the spaces become hyphens, so Tax Returns becomes tax-returns. That keeps tag filters working.
The buttons along the bottom
- Delete (the bin, on the far left) throws the item away. It is separated from the rest so you do not hit it by accident.
- Share opens the share screen.
- Open link shows on a note that contains a web address, and opens it in your browser.
- Open file hands the file to whatever app your computer normally opens it with.
- Save to device writes the picture or file to your save folder. Hover it afterwards and it tells you where it went.
- Copy puts the item on your clipboard and closes the screen.
- Cancel closes without saving. Esc does the same.
- Save writes your changes.
Leave the screen open and it keeps up with itself. If your other device edits the same item, or the models on this one finish reading it, the blanks fill in. Anything you have typed is yours and is never written over.
